START THE NEW YEAR OFF RIGHT WITH THESE FOUR GREAT IDEAS, ONE PER WEEK, THAT ARE SURE TO CONNECT YOU TO YOUR LOVED ONES: 1) Have a campout in the living room! Surprise the kids this Saturday night and plan a campout in the living room. When it is time to go to bed, have everyone show up in the living room with their blankets or sleeping bags, pillows and flashlights. Play a game of flashlight tag on the ceiling, tell stories, give at least 3 hugs! Most of all, enjoy the simplicity of spending time together doing something special. 2) Make Homemade Ice Cream. Believe it or not, but you can make ice cream in a plastic bag! It's easy: Here is what you will need: - 2 tablespoons sugar - 1 cup half and half - 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract - 1/2 cup salt (The bigger the granules, the better. Kosher or rock salt works best, but table salt is fine.) - Ice cubes (enough to fill each gallon-size bag about half full) - 1 pint-size ziplock bag - 1 gallon-size ziplock bag Combine the sugar, half and half, and vanilla extract in the pint-size bag and seal it tightly. Place the salt and ice in the gallon-size bag, then place the sealed smaller bag inside as well. Seal the larger bag. Now shake the bags until the mixture hardens (about 5 minutes). Feel the small bag to determine when it's done. Take the smaller bag out of the larger one, add mix-ins, and eat the ice cream right out of the bag. Easy cleanup too! Serves 1. 3) Have a game night. Let everyone choose his/her favorite game and set a timer so that everyone gets to play their favorite choice for a game. 4) Have a Recognition Dinner! Give every family member a piece of paper that contains the names of all family members, including his/her own. In preparation for the dinner, each family member should write down something they want to recognize each person for. It might be for helping with homework. It might be for how kind that person is. Then, at your special dinner, go around the table and recognize each person. This special meal will be the event of the month for sure.

We will appreciate the little things And be thankful each day For the closeness of our family Even those that are far away.
